Atlanta Zoo

Atlanta Zoo is one of the major attractions in Atlanta, Georgia in USA. It is very famous park due to its wildlife. Atlanta Zoo, located in Atlanta’s Grant Park is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums founded in 1889 and is established in 40 acre (nearly 16 hectare). The zoo was actually founded when local lumber merchant George Gress bought a traveling zoo, which had gone bankrupt. The zoo was then expanded in 1930s with the addition of private menagerie.

The zoo witnesses around one million visitors a year. It is one the major tourist places and housing more than 1000 animals from around 250 species across the world. The most noticeable holdings of the zoo are three giant pandas namely; Yang Yang, Lun Lun and Mei Lan. They are taken on loan from China’s Chengdu Zoo until 2009. Lun Lun was being focused for a captive-breeding program for about seven years before giving birth to Mei Lan on September 6, 2006.

Zoo – the home of several species

Atlanta zoo is a participant in a very good mission called AZA’s Species Survival Program with an effort for the red panda and Sumatran Tiger, which are one of the most endangered animals in the present world. A petting zoo allows its visitors to interact coolly with many species of domestic animals like sheep and goats. The Atlanta zoo also exhibits other significant animals like Sumatran orangutans, African elephants, and Komodo dragon and black rhinos to name them.

The zoo witnessed an emotional event when female giant panda, Lun Lun gave a birth to her first cub in the month of September 6, 2006. This was very much wanted event as she was artificially inseminated in March, for the third year. The event was full of emotion when the baby panda was named traditionally with rituals of China when it was 100 years old. The female cub was named Mei Lan.

Nearly about $4 million Ford African Rain Forest habitat is the home to twenty four western lowland gorillas. These are one of the two largest collections of the species in entire Northern America. Atlanta zoo was also home to the most popular Willie B. Willie B is a gorilla named for former Mayor of Atlanta William B. Hartsfield (the one, who contributed a lot in aviation for US and honored by giving the name to Atlanta Airport). The recent news from the zoo came to the world when one of the Willie. B’s former mates gave birth to twins. This being a rare occurrence among gorillas in general and rarest rare in captive ones became an excitement cum curiosity to the zoologists and to the general public.

They value the importance of nature and its creatures irrespective of the species.
