Atlanta Public Schools

Public schools in USA mean an elementary or secondary school that is supported and administrated by the state and local officials. Atlanta public schools are known as APS. These are the schools based in Atlanta, Georgia in United States. APS is run by the Atlanta Board of Education with superintendent. Presently, the system has an active enrolment of nearly about 57000 students in approximately 85 schools.

In the late 1990s, APS (Atlanta Public Schools) faced lot many challenges those were typical of large urban districts. Students were failing to meet district and state achievement goals in some Atlanta schools. In others, many students met all of them but few exceeded. Furthermore, some Atlanta Public Schools had had some instructional leadership issues and lacked school community engagement to tackle those issues. Atlanta Public Schools launched initiatives with the focus on those areas.

In the beginning of the twentieth century, they came with a solution. Three elementary schools implemented Co-nect School Improvement. It was nothing but a data-driven approach to improve design to help schools in achieving aggressive district goals. It was then reformed by their standards, literacy and many other aspects.

APS operates all of the public schools in the city of Atlanta. It includes administration, examination and other activities. However, in general, the funding comes from federal level, state level and local level. One thing is to be kept in mind that in US, institutions of higher education those are subsidized by US states are also called as ‘public’. However, unlike public secondary schools, public universities take the fees in terms of the tuition charge, though these fees subsidized. This subsidy is generally for all but especially designed for ‘in-state’ students and are generally lower than those charged by private schools or universities.

There are some committees like; The Metro Atlanta Chamber’s Atlanta Public Schools Committee that focuses on the improvement of the students’ achievement in APS. A primary objective is nothing but working with the Atlanta School Board and Superintendent so that it turns a model of the urban school governance.

The education in these schools is considered to be having mixed. There are various opinions about Atlanta Public Schools. Some of the people proud to be having these type of schools for their children’s education and there are parents who never want their children to be admitted to public schools as they don’t consider the standard of education and way of approach to child’s parents or guardians.
