Ups and downs

Looking at the history, the Atlanta Flacons franchise began on 30th June in the year of 1965 when NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle granted some ownership to Rankin M. Smith Sr. The falcons started somewhat badly as they lost their first nine games in the season in the month of August, 1966.The first victory they reported was on the road against the New York Giants.

The milestone was in 1978, when the Falcons entered their first playoff series. They won the Wild Card Playoffs against the Eagles and they lose only to the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Playoffs. In the year of 1980, they amazingly finished 12-4 with only a game lost to Cowboys again in the Divisional Playoffs.

But, the greatest season to date was in 1998. On the November 8th, they won with a drastic margin 41-10 over the Patriots at New England overcoming a streak of 22 consecutive losses at cold-weather sites in the year end of 1982. Atlanta Falcons finished with 14-2 regular season record and the NFC West division championship. At NFC Championship Game, in the month of January, 1999 Falcons upset the top-seeded 15-1 Vikings at Minnesota. It was 30-27 in overtime. However, they would lose 34-19 in the Super Bowl XXXIII against the Denver Broncos.

The Uniforms and Logo

The uniform and logo has been changed several time in the history of Atlanta Falcons. At the time of debut, in the year of 1966, the Falcons wore red helmets having black falcon crest logo. They wore either white or black jerseys with white pants. On the initial stage, the Falcon crest logo was also on the sleeves of jerseys but after four year, that was replaced by a red and white stripe pattern. They adopted the red jersey from the black one in the year 1971. The club began to put silver pants in the year of 1978. Dramatically, the prototype white helmet was adapted prior to 1974 which was never worn!

Again there was a change in the helmet. In the year 1990, the uniform design changed to black helmets, either white or black jerseys along with silver pants. To match perfect contrast, the numbers printed on whiter jersey were initially black but then changed into the red in 1997.

The logo was redesigned with red and silver accents to depict a more aggressive and powerful Falcons that is closely related to the alphabet ‘F’. Though the Falcons still wore black helmets, the new uniform was jersey and pant with red trim down the sides of the apparel.

In the year of 2004, red jersey became the primary and the black one as an alternate but in recent seasons, Falcons wore an all black combination for home games.
