Atlanta AquariumIntroduction and Amazing facts In Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium is labeled as world’s largest aquarium. However, Atlanta aquarium has been contested with Dubai’s three stories ‘Dubai Mall aquarium’ when it will be opened in Burj Dubai project. The giant structure of Atlanta/Georgia aquarium is located at Pemberton Place in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta aquarium was constructed on 20 acre (8 ha; 81000 m2) site north of Centennial Olympic Park in the downtown of Atlanta. The construction and development was funded mostly by $250 million donation from the Bernie Marcus, the founder of Home Depot. It was a pretty big sum to build such a huge aquarium and for that Marcus and his wife Billi had visited around 56 aquariums in thirteen countries to research and design the final structure of the present Atlanta aquarium. The aquarium was initially opened with only 60 animal habitats. But soon, the progress begun and on November 21-23, 2005, it was powered and opened with 16400 square-feet of ball room space, gift shops, parking lot, two food service kitchens, a 4-The theater and an on-site restaurant. The prices for the tickets were decided on the non-profit basis being $24 per adult, $20 for seniors, and $18 for children. The aquarium did spread its fame in a very short span as it witnessed its millionth guest on the very 98th day of its opening. The Atlanta or Georgia aquarium houses between 100000 to 120000 fish and other marine creatures. One of the noticeable specimens is the whale shark. There are four young whale sharks (imported from Taiwan) and four beluga whales. The Exhibits The aquatic creatures are arranged to be displayed in five different galleries namely; Georgia Explorer, River Scout, Ocean Voyager, Tropical Diver and Water Quest. Each of them corresponds to a particular environment. The Georgia Explorer, especially geared by children, is at the left when one enters in the aquarium. What makes it popular is number of touch tanks with rays and sharks. It also features sea turtles and the wildlife of Gray’s Reef (a National Marine Sanctuary off the Georgia Coast). At River Scout, visitors can see North American fish from the bottom up with the overhead river. Electric fish, other unusual freshwater life and piranha etc can be seen. Cold Water Quest houses animals from Polar Regions. This exhibit also includes beluga whales, California sea lions, Japanese spider crabs and African black-footed penguins are major attractions.
