Atlanta AirportIt was established as Candler Field and, in 1946 that was renamed as Atlanta Municipal airport. Under the administration of Mayor Maynard Jackson, the construction was begun on the midfield terminal in the month of January, 1977. it was the largest construction project in the South costing $500 million. Atlanta’s former mayor William Berry Hartsfield, who did much to promote air travel was honored by keeping the name as William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, which was opened on September 21 in the year of 1980. At present, Atlanta airport, locally known as Hartsfield Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson or simply Hartsfield is internationally known as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL, ICAO: KATL, FAA LID: ATL). This gorgeous structure is located seven miles south of the central business district of Atlanta, Georgia in United States. The airport is partly located within the southern city limits of the Atlanta. The city of College Park, Georgia, which is in south of the city limits of Atlanta, is just adjacent to the airport. The counties in which, the Atlanta airport comes are Clayton and Fulton. The structure and arrangement Atlanta airport has two main terminals where passengers check in. These are South Terminal and North Terminal. Though these are terminals, but in reality, these are nothing but north and south sides of the one large building. The middle part of the building is called as main terminal where the security screening is done before passengers move to their flights. Airside concourses are tackled very successfully in the distance from the terminal. They are given the name as Concourses T, A, B, C, D and E. There are moving sidewalks and an underground ‘people mover’ train that connects concourses and the terminal building. For better connectivity, airport has its own train station on the city’s rapid transit system called MARTA. The train station lies inside the main building as a part of the airport. |
